Despite the damage done to this beacon during the Civil War, Cape Lookout endured and went on to serve as a model for Cape Hatteras, Bodie Island and other sentinels. In 1873 Cape Lookout received its black and white-diamond pattern, and confusion between the different towers was put to rest. The same year, painters marked the Cape Hatteras tower and the brand new Bodie Island with their distinctive markings. The automated Cape Lookout still serves as an active aid to navigation.
